Finnish steelmaker Ruukki has issued a ‘Summary of the Environmental Year in 2009' as a part of its ‘Annual Report 2009', revealing the environmental actions it has taken during the year.
During 2009, Ruukki continued work to promote energy and material efficiency and to reduce the lifecycle environmental impacts of its products, the summary said, adding that progress was made in the energy efficiency of production with the aim of achieving energy savings of nine percent, compared to 2005 levels, by 2016.
Ruukki used special steel products to design energy-efficient solutions for customers and, for example, developed concept solutions for low- and zero-energy office building structures and building technology. Furthermore, energy-efficiency at production sites was improved as part of certified environmental management systems, which covered 98 percent of production.
The company also said in its environmental summary that recycling steel and use of mineral products reduced global carbon dioxide emissions by 610,000 mt, adding that environmental investments totaled €21 million during 2009.
