On September 8, Finnish metal-based components, systems and integrated systems supplier Ruukki announced that it is to initiate employer-employee negotiations to temporarily lay off employees at its Kalajoki plant in Finland, which manufactures components for the engineering industry.

According to the company's statement, orders have been below forecast and the workforce must be temporarily scaled down in line with lower demand.

Ruukki said that the negotiations would affect all 108 employees at Kalajoki and a maximum of 40 workers and five salaried employees are expected to be laid off at any one time. It is planned to begin the layoffs later this year. The extent and duration of the layoffs will become clear as the negotiations progress.
