The Russian scrap processor and steel producer MAIR has commissioned a new continuous casting machine at its subsidiary Sulinskiy Steel Mill (STAKS) in the Rostov region.

The new continuous casting machine will allow MAIR to increase the steel smelting capacities at STAKS to 1.1 million metric tons of steel per year, and to raise the monthly output of billets from 15,000-17,000 metric tons to 40,000-45,000 metric tons. The maximum monthly capacity of the new continuous casting machine is 90,000 metric tons. However, due to the current low demand for steel products, MAIR does not consider it reasonable to operate the machine at full capacity.

The commissioning of the new continuous casting machine at STAKS is in line with MAIR's modernization and development project for its steelmaking facilities, directed towards increasing the mill's annual steel production capacity to 1.1-1.2 million metric tons. The total investments of the group in the reconstruction of STAKS amount to $180 million.
