Russia may continue AD duties on steel bars from Ukraine

In 2002, Moscow imposed an antidumping duty of 21 percent on imports of steel bars imported from Ukraine. However, the fact that the antidumping duty is set to expire on August 14, 2005, has local Russian companies worried. Several steel bar producers have voiced their fear that the cancellation of duties may lead to sales of subject merchandise at prices cheaper than that of Russian origin products. They argue that such a situation could cause local companies to lose their competitiveness. Upon the petitions of local producers of steel bars, Russia's Economic Development and Trade Ministry (MERT) will reportedly recommend that the government introduce a provisional surtax of 21 percent for a four-month period.
