Local news reported Friday that the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) fined Republic Steel $7,000 for an accident that killed a steel worker in February.

Republic Steel has 15 working days to respond to the citation, which was imposed based on the severity of the accident, but not necessarily the “magnitude of the death” according to Kimberly Nelson, area director of the Toledo, Ohio OSHA office.

Frank Johnson, 62, died as a result of multiple crush injuries in a train yard accident at Republic Steel’s Lorain facility. According to the accident report, Johnson was hanging onto a moving train when he became caught between the train and still cars.
