On February 22, Chinese steelmaker Qingdao Iron and Steel Group Co. (Qingdao Steel) announced that it is now awaiting approval from Qingdao Environmental Protection Bureau for its project for relocation to Dongjiakou harbor zone in the city of Qingdao in Shandong Province. After relocation, Qingdao Steel will have an annual steel output capacity of 4 million mt.
The current site of Qingdao Steel, located in the heart of the city of Qingdao, is considered to have a negative impact on the environment and on urban development. Three years ago, Qingdao Steel first announced its plans to relocate and to upgrade its
steelmaking facilities at the same time, with an anticipated total investment of up to RMB 17.5 billion ($2.78 billion).
