POSCO commenced blank production with 1.7 million ton capacity
South Korean steelmaker POSCO has commenced its
production of steel sheet for
automotive industry as end of last week with a 1.7 million ton capacity at its new Tailor Welded Blank (TWB) plant on the same day when plant's
construction was completed. Added to that, a second stage of the plant will take place and for capacity and
production increase be completed in 2004.
This new TWB plant produces steel sheets in various thickness, strengths and quality based on customer's requirements and is located in Gwangyang Works which is a facility designed for becoming a specialist in
automotive steel sheet
production by POSCO. By way of providing such a customized service POSCO is aiming to increase competitiveness of its customer companies.
According to industry reports POSCO has already made agreements with several automobile makers; such as GM Daewoo, Ssangyong Motors and Renault Samsung Motors, in order to provide TWB steel sheet for certain automobile models. Furthermore, it is reported that there are some Japanese and Southeast Asian
automotive companies which POSCO currently is in negotiations with.
