POSCO orders greenfield steel mill from Siemens VAI

Austria-based engineering and plantmaking company, Siemens VAI Mining and Metals Technologies, has announced the receipt of an order from South Korean steelmaker POSCO for the supply of a new greenfield steel mill at its production site in Gwangyang.

The project will be implemented in a consortium with POSCO Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd (POSCO E&C) and POSCON, an affiliated company of the automation division of POSCO.

The scope of the agreement includes Siemens' engineering and the supply of key components, systems and technological packages for an LD (BOF) converter, RH (Ruhrstahl-Heraeus) degassing plant and slab caster.

An annual total of 3.2 million tons of slabs produced at the new facility will be rolled into high quality plates at a new plate mill which is also under construction.

The new steel mill is scheduled to come into operation in May 2010.

The financial details have not been disclosed.
