South Korean steel producer POSCO has successfully developed laser welding technology for use in its cold rolled sheet production facilities.

POSCO began work on developing a laser welder in 2010. The company said that it obtained satisfactory test results from the trial run of the welder at its No. 1 cold rolling mill in September this year.

POSCO is expected to save about KRW 70 billion ($61.2 million) per year by successfully developing its own laser welders at a manufacturing cost which is only 50 percent of the purchase price for imported welders.

Unlike the existing imported laser welders which employed a mechanical cutting method, POSCO's laser welder adopts a laser cutting method that can clearly cut coils for precise welding.

Meanwhile, POSCO plans to transfer its laser welder manufacturing technology to POSCO ICT for sales of the welders both at home and abroad.
