A Philippine port authority suspended iron ore transshipment operations from Brazil’s Vale after local residents complained about a spill and water discoloration in Subic Bay, media reported.

According to Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) chair, Roberto Garcia, the agency investigated the spill of iron ore from the feeder vessel--a small ship that transfer cargo or shipping containers--of Vale, resulting in the suspension of Vale activities at the port.

“The iron ore left on the deck was washed aside by strong rains. This has caused discoloration in the water,” Garcia said.

According to Garcia, the iron ore was being brought to the Philippines from Brazil before being shipped to China.
