Pennsylvania promises $30.7 million in grants to US Steel

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett announced Friday that the state will commit $30.7 million in grants to US Steel Corp in a bid to keep the company’s headquarters in Pittsburgh.

US Steel spokeswoman Sarah Cassella told media that the company’s lease on its headquarters expires in 2017, and while there is no official plan to stay in Pittsburgh, Cassella said officials are “exploring all of our options.”

The company already has $187 million slated for projects in the state such as plans to reline one of its Mon Valley Work blast furnaces at its Edgar Thomson Plant in Braddock.

In the Governor’s announcement during a press conference at US Steel’s facility in Munhall, which coincided with events across the state for National Manufacturing Day, he said that manufacturing is “critical to the economy of Pennsylvania and the economy of the United States, and that's why I'm committed to making it stronger.”
