Karachi-based Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) has announced that its production has almost come to a halt due to gas supply disruptions since June 10. The company said that repeated requests to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources have not resulted in any positive response.

The steelmaker said that continuous gas stoppage will cause water leakages from the coolers of furnaces, which will lead to extensive damage to the huge furnace structure and may shut the plant completely.

The stoppage of gas has already made steelmaking and slab rolling impossible and now the blast furnace which is the only remaining producing unit is also at a risk of severe damage and ultimate closure due to gas stoppage. PSM warned that plant’s closure will leave the Pakistani industry at the mercy of imports at a huge cost.
