Mexican steel association Canacero said out-of-standard and “suspicious” Mexican steel imports have diminished.

Despite not providing exact figures, Canacero said both illegal and “suspicious” situations under which steel is imported in Mexico declined, including the triangulation of products that try to bypass existing duties.

Canacero’s president, Guillermo Vogel, told Mexican media there are some 200 cases where steel was imported to Mexico under a different classification, with the aim of avoiding duties.

The local steel association also said the existing 15 percent duty on certain steel imports from countries Mexico does not have trade agreements with, especially China, have also discouraged what Canacero labeled as the unfair competition with China.
