OMK-Stal, a subsidiary of the Russian pipe producer United Metallurgical Company (OMK), has announced the startup of cold trials at the electric arc furnace (EAF) in its new rolling complex. The trials are being conducted by specialists from Turkey's GAMA Endusti and also from Italian plantmaker Danieli & C.

The construction of the new rolling complex, the first rolling facility in the world which specializes in production of steel with special characteristics to be further rolled into pipes, was started on June 11, 2005. The annual production capacity of the first division of the complex will be 1.2 million metric tons of hot rolled coils with thickness between one and 12.7 mm.

Following the full commissioning of production at the new complex, it will be able to satisfy the needs in hot rolled coils of OMK pipe rolling subsidiaries Vyksa Steel Works and Almetyevsk Pipe Plant.

OMK has invested around $600 million in the construction of the new rolling complex at OMK-Stal.
