Japanese steelmaker Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation has announced that the expansion project at the Boggabri coal mine has been completed. The project aims to improve the quality of the coal produced and increase the production of metallurgical coal. The Boggabri coal mine is a joint venture between the affiliates of NSSMC and Japan-based firms Idemitsu Kosan and The Chugoku Electric Power.

The expansion project, which includes construction of a new coal handling and preparation plant, and new train load-out and new product stockpile areas, started in 2012. The company expects to produce 7 million mt of coal annually (around a 20 percent increase compared to the actual production in 2014) from the mine for more than 20 years from now on.
