New vacuum degasser goes online at AK Steel plant

The first heat of molten steel has been successful processed through AK Steel’s Ashland, Kentucy Works’ new vacuum degasser. The degasser is part of a modernization project undertaken in the past year. The total cost of the project is said to be $65 million and includes, in addition to the degasser, modifications to an existing continuous caster. James L. Wainscott, AK president and CEO said the ultimate aim of the modernization project is to “closely match its steel production capabilities with customer requirements for ultra-low carbon steel products, primarily for automotive and appliance markets." The project is currently two months ahead of schedule and once it is fully-operational, will eliminate AK’s need to purchase premium-priced degassed steel. AK Steel produces flat-rolled carbon, stainless and electrical steels, as well as tubular steel products for the automotive, appliance, construction and manufacturing markets.
