Mozambican coal output to surge by 493 percent in 2012

According to the High Commission of the Republic of Mozambique, Mozambican Prime Minister Aires Ali has presented to the country's parliament his government's economic and social plan for 2012, envisaging an economic growth rate of 7.5 percent.

According to the economic and social plan approved in the country's parliament, increases in coal production will make a significant contribution to overall growth of 27.5 percent of the mining industry in Mozambique in 2012. Mozambican coal production this year is expected to reach one million mt, climbing in 2012 to 5.93 million mt, i.e., increasing by 493 percent compared to the current year.

Expansion of coal production will be the result of the start of commercial mining at the Benga, Cahora Bassa and Moatize facilities in Tete province with expected production of 5.8 million mt of coking coal and 172,000 mt of thermal coal.
