US Steel announced Monday that another 285 workers have been laid off at the company’s Gary Works plant in northwest Indiana.

In a statement, company spokeswoman Courtney Boone said the decision was based on “challenging market conditions that are impacting the company.”

About 67 of the workers affected are in salaried management positions, while the remaining are hourly union-represented workers. US Steel also stated that the layoffs are temporary.
