MMK to commission revamped hot strip mill 2500 in mid-July

The Russian steel producer Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has announced that it plans to finish the revamping and commissioning of its hot strip mill 2500 on Metallurgists' Day in Russia, i.e., on July 18, 2010.

Accordingly, the revamping of the hot strip mill 2500, started in 2007, is the first large-scale reconstruction to take place at MMK's flat rolling shop No.4, and is being carried out in conditions of ongoing production.

When completed, this project will allow MMK to increase the mill's annual production capacity to 5 million mt, to broaden the product mix from the mill to a thickness range of 1.2-25.0 mm compared to 1.8-14.0 mm today, within a width range of 1,000-2,350 mm, in coils weighing up to 40 metric tons, with enhanced quality characteristics, providing high quality coils for cold rolling and coating, and cutting hot rolled coils into lengths according to customer specifications. Besides, the revamping of the mill will make it possible to minimize power and material consumption.

Once revamped, the mill will have three high-capacity (370 mt/h) walking beam furnaces, a group of roughing stands, a pre-finishing stand, an intermediate roller table, a coiler, a coil transportation and removal line, and a cut-to-length line. A 12 MW gas turbine station will supply heat and steam to the mill. The main process equipment for the mill will be manufactured by Ukraine's Novokramatorsk Mechanical Engineering Plant, with Czech Republic-based ALTA acting as the general supplier of both main process and off-contract equipment.
