The Russian steel producer MMK has announced that it is proceeding with the reconstruction of its Maliy Kuibas iron ore open-pit mine.

During the reconstruction process, MMK is renewing the machinery fleet of the iron ore mine in question. The task of renewing the said machinery is 40 percent completed at the current time, while the remaining 60 percent will be completed during next year.

The reconstruction of the Maliy Kuibas open-pit mine will allow MMK to raise its overall annual mining volume to 28 million mt from the current 21 million mt, while by 2009 the iron ore mining volume will already have increased by 200,000 mt per year.

It is planned that iron ore mining at MMK's Maliy Kuibas mine will increase by 600,000 mt in the coming years to an annual 2.3 million mt.
