Mittal to shut down Weirton galvanizing line

Mittal Steel Co. will shut down the galvanizing line at its West Virginia Weirton facility, eliminating 40 more jobs in addition to the 800 job cuts announced in November. The line, scheduled to close in three months, is no longer accepting orders for galvanized products. The company says it will keep trying to serve these customers, though they are not sure from where it will supply the galvanized steel. Mittal plans to restructure the Weirton plant's production, turning the mill into a tin plate plant and using steel slabs shipped in from lower-cost mills. On November 29, Mittal first announced it would shut down its Weirton blast furnace and permanently cease production of raw steel because of historically high raw material and shipping costs.
