Mining ban to force JSW Steel to shut down Vijayanagar plant

Indian steelmaker JSW Steel's biggest steel plant Vijayanagar, which accounts for 70 percent of JSW's total steel output, faces an involuntary shut down in three days' time because of an iron ore supply shortage.

JSW Steel stated that it has only three days' iron ore stock left due to the ban on mining in Karnataka's Bellary district enforced by India's Supreme Court. The Bellary district produces 21 percent of the country's iron ore supply.

The company provides at least 50 percent of the 16.5 million mt iron ore required for the Vijaynagar plant from mines in Bellary. JSW Steel also provides iron ore from companies including NMDC, VMPL and MML.
