Mexico’s steel consumption to rise in 2005

Mexico’s National Chamber of Iron and Steel Producers (Canacero) expects the country’s steel products consumption to increase 7.3% in 2005. The country’s steel consumption rose 8.4% in 2004. Likewise, Mexico’s steel production, which grew 10% to 16.7 million tons in 2004, is projected to increase 7% to 17.8 million tons in 2005. Officials indicate that Mexico’s per capita steel consumption is around 150 kg. For comparison, the per capita consumption rate in the US, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and European countries ranges from 380-1’000 kg.
