Mexico’s environmental and natural resources secretariat, Semarnat, is working to establish procedures to demand a high environmental performance for both domestic and imported steel.

Rafael Alaman, secretary at Semarnat, said Mexico will continue working to establish goals that could help the country reduce emissions.

“One of the current challenges is to increase the competitiveness [of the local steel industry] and to promote efficiency, so the industry’s growth could be sustainable,” he told participants of the 5th Mexican Steel Congress.

According to Alaman,  30 percent of the steel produced in Mexico is made out of recycled scrap, a level which is said to be higher than the global average, which is about 22 percent. He also added the Mexican steel industry consumes 33 percent less energy than the global average.
