Mexican senator Tereso Medina Ramirez told local media he expects the Mexican government will extend an existing 15 percent duty on certain steel imports from the countries Mexico does not have trade agreements with, especially China.

The duties expire in October this year. Earlier this year, Mexican steelmaker Ternium Mexico said the existing duty, which was first implemented in October 2015, should be further renewed.

Products covered by the duty include slab, CRC, HRC, heavy plate and wire rod from countries including China, Taiwan and South Korea.
