Mexico’s automotive production increased 7 percent in January, year-on-year, to 266,424 units, according to data released by the nation’s automotive association, Amia. The increase was attributed to new automaker plants that commenced production last year.

The report also said domestic car sales jumped 21.3 percent in January to 103,697 units, and about 46 percent of cars sold within the domestic market were produced domestically, while the other 54 percent came from outside Mexico.

Mexican auto exports in the first month of the year registered a 15.2 percent increase year-on-year, reaching 204,907 units. Of the total, 144,450 cars were exported to the US, a 13.7 percent increase year-on-year, while Canada and Asia received 29,666 and 6,340 units, respectively, a roughly 36 percent increase in both cases. Meanwhile, exports to Latin America dropped by 25.5 percent to 12,006 units.
