The Ukrainian mining and steel producing group Metinvest has announced that in the second quarter of 2012 its crude steel production decreased by 7.5 percent to 3.29 million mt compared to the corresponding quarter of 2011. In the first six months of the current year, Metinvest produced 6.74 million mt of crude steel, down 8.1 percent year on year.
In addition, in the second quarter Metinvest produced 2.55 million mt of rolled steel products, down 1.12 percent year on year, including 1.81 million mt of flat products and 658,000 mt of long products. In the January-June period, the company's rolled steel product output amounted to 4.7 million mt, decreasing by 2.5 percent compared to the corresponding period of 2011.
In the second quarter, the coking coal production of Metinvest increased by 12.1 percent year on year to 3.14 million mt, while the company produced 9.02 million mt of iron ore concentrate, increasing 1.6 percent compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year. In the first six months of 2012, the company's coking coal production and iron ore concentrate output reached 6.11 million mt and 18.21 million mt, up 11.4 percent and 2.5 percent respectively, both year on year.
