The Russian mining and steel producing company Mechel has announced the commencement of reconstruction work on the light section/wire mill-250 at its Izhstal facility.

The equipment necessary for the reconstruction of the mill-250 will be supplied by Germany-based company Siemens VAI Metals Technologies S.R.L.

The revamping of the mill is expected to result in the reduction of the mill's production costs and in the improvement of product quality.

In addition, upon the completion of the reconstruction process, the range of manufactured products at the mill-250 will be expanded to contain long products of carbon, alloyed, high-speed and stainless steel, including thermostrengthened rebar.

Overall, the $45 million-worth project will up the mill-250's production capacity to 300,000 metric tons a year.

The reconstruction of the mill-250, which is in line with Mechel's overall capital expenditure program for 2007-2011, is expected to be completed within a period of 18 months.
