LME adds Chicago and Detroit as delivery points

On August 17, the London Metal Exchange (LME) announced that it has approved Chicago and Detroit as points of good delivery for its steel billet contract to further support the use of the LME's hedging tools by market participants in the US steel industry.

The new delivery points will be listed with effect from November 16, and the LME intends to name storage facilities in due course.

The listing of new locations follows the LME's announcement in June to establish its first US delivery location for steel in New Orleans.

The three US locations strengthen the LME's existing network of steel delivery locations worldwide, which includes locations in South Korea, Malaysia, Belgium, Turkey, the Netherlands and Dubai.

Volumes of steel futures traded at the LME have surged in 2010, and so far this year 91,133 lots have been traded, equivalent to 5.9 million metric tons with a notional value of $2.8 billion.

In each of the last five months, new monthly records have been set, driven by demand from a broad range of market participants including producers, consumers, traders, stockists and investors.

August is also on track for strong performance with 14,579 lots traded up to and including August 16, compared with 18,906 lots traded in the whole of July.
