Latvian steel producer Liepajas Metalurgs has announced the signing of agreements with Siemens VAI Metal Technologies GmbH, A/s Augstsprieguma Tikls, ABB Power Systems-FACTS, ELEME MESSER LM and SMA LM for the supply of equipment in the framework of its modernization program.

Under the new agreements, a new 100 metric ton EAF will be installed at the Latvian producer's plant. The new EAF will replace the company's three open hearth furnaces which have a combined annual production capacity of 550,000 metric tons.

In addition, a new longs producing mill with a capacity of 400,000 metric tons a year will be commissioned at Liepajas Metalurgs. The new longs mill, which will consist of two production lines, will be specialized in the manufacture of rebar in coils, wire rod and a wide range of profiles.

The new EAF and longs mill are expected to be put in operation gradually, starting from 2010.
