Wales-based hot rolled coil (HRC) producer MIR Steel in Newport (formerly Alpha Steel) is renamed Liberty Steel Newport as the group expresses commitment to restart its mothballed rolling mill shortly. While preparations are on in full force for the restart of the mill, Liberty now brings its second vessel to its own port in Newport.

In June electricity was supplied by the nearby power plant owned by the family to commence the re-commissioning process for the hot strip mill. At the same time Liberty brought in its first vessel of 20,000 mt of hot rolled coil, this is now completed by a 15,000 mt of debar vessel currently discharging at the group's port in Newport.

Liberty House Group owner Sanjeev Gupta told SteelOrbis that ‎the company will regularly import finished steel products from select partners to complement its own production range so the business can offer a comprehensive service to its clients offering a broad range of steel products needed by the market. According to Mr. Gupta, Liberty will become the leading steel distributor in the country in the near future, hot rolled coil produced by the mill will be sold side by side with a range of competitively sourced steel products taking advantage of the group's own port and infrastructure in South Wales

At the same time the company will also look to export its products to Europe and beyond ‎using its own port.

In light of the depressed hot metal spreads against scrap and UK's high electricity costs Liberty will import slabs for rolling at its mill rather than re-commissioning its arc furnaces for now but intends to consider revamping the melt shop in the future once the UK government's ‎initiatives to reduce power cost for large users comes into force.
