Russian steel producer Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has announced that it envisages to invest more than RUB 5.4 billion ($92.88 million) in environmental projects in the context of its capital expenditures (CAPEX) program for 2016-2017, which include completion of the reconstruction of sulphur capture systems at its sinter plant, construction of aspiration systems for casting beds at its blast furnaces No. 9 and No. 10, reconstruction of the gas-cleaning unit at its double-hearth furnace and reconstruction of its circulation water supply system.
Meanwhile, during a meeting with Russian industrial leaders, focusing on environmental issues and environmental policy implemented in Chelyabinsk oblast, the company’s CEO Pavel Shilyaev stated that, in order to improve the results of MMK’s environmental initiatives, in 2015 the company developed a “Clean City” strategic program, aimed at achieving a low level of pollution in the city of Magnitogorsk by 2025. The program comprises 31 initiatives, including construction of new dust and gas capture units, reconstruction of the first processing stage, construction of a new sinter plant, the new blast furnace No. 11 and the new coke furnace battery No. 12. Total MMK’s investment in environmental initiatives by 2025 will amount to RUB 35.6 billion ($611.64 million).
