Japan’s automobile output down 10.9 percent in H1

Japanese automobile production in June this year totaled 808,557 units, decreasing by 84,588 units or 9.5 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. Japan's auto output indicated a year-on-year decline for the 10th consecutive month in June, according to the data provided by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA).

Automobile production in Japan in the first half of the current year amounted to 4,674,956 units, decreasing by 573,015 units or 10.9 percent compared to the first half of the previous year.

Domestic automobile sales in June this year in Japan stood at 450,828 vehicles, down 10.8 percent as compared with the same month of the previous year. In the meantime, the country's automobile exports in June amounted to 411,577 units, down by 19,443 units or 4.5 percent compared to June 2012 and decreasing on year-on-year basis for the 11th consecutive month.

Automobile exports in the first half of 2013 amounted to 2,295,284 units, decreasing by 192,691 units or 7.7 percent compared to the corresponding period of 2012. According to JAMA, the country's automobile exports switched to a decreasing trend in 2013 after last year's upturn. The total value of automobiles exported in the first half of the current year was $73.3 million including $52.5 million for vehicles and $20.8 million for parts. The overall figure marks a decrease of $8 million or 9.8 percent year on year.

Meanwhile, overseas vehicle production by Japanese automakers during the first quarter of the current year totaled 4,197,494 units, according to JAMA. The figure represents an increase of 1.2 percent compared to the same period of 2012. The association noted that the outcome reflects expanded local production worldwide, except in Europe, Africa, and Oceania during the quarter in question.

In the January-March period of this year, Japanese automakers' vehicle production in Asia totaled 2,271,288 units, up 3.7 percent, their production in North America came to 1,145,190 units, up 0.3 percent, in the US alone Japanese vehicle output reached 930,421 units, up 4.3 percent, while in the EU Japanese automakers' vehicle production amounted to 358,881 units, down 6.1 percent, all compared to the same period of 2012.
 
For the fiscal year 2012-13 (April 1, 2012-March 31, 2013), overseas production by Japanese automakers stood at 15,876,187 units, with an increase of 14.9 percent compared to the previous fiscal year. In the period in question, Japanese overseas car production saw growth in all regions worldwide except Europe.
