Japan sees increase in new vehicle sales

Data from the Japanese Automobile Dealers Association (JADA) show that Japan's domestic sales of new cars, trucks and buses rose 7% year on year to 278'661 units in May. Passenger car sales rose 6.8% year on year to 238'182 units last month, while truck sales increased 8.7% to 39'429 units. Bus sales, however, declined 1% to 1'050 units. JADA indicates that overall new vehicle sales fell 2% to 3.94 million units during the fiscal year ended March 31, 2005. Sales of Toyota Motor Corp., the industry leader in Japan, amounted to 126'326 vehicles in May, up 4% year on year. Separately, the Japanese Mini-Vehicle Association disclosed that mini-vehicle sales reached 146'387 units in May, a year-on-year increase of 8.3%. Japan's largest mini-vehicle maker, Suzuki Motor Corp., announced that its sales rose 3.5% to 45'790 units.
