According to the statistics released by the Italian steel producers' association Federacciai, in the first six months of 2011 Italy's steel imports from non-European Union (EU) countries reached 5.45 million metric tons, increasing by 32.5 percent year on year, while its steel exports to non-EU destinations totaled 2.38 million metric tons, down 10 percent year on year.
In January-June this year, Italy's semi-finished steel product imports from non-EU countries reached 1.715 million metric tons, showing no variation year on year. Meanwhile, the country's semi-finished steel product exports to countries outside the EU amounted to 99,000 metric tons, decreasing by 61.2 percent year on year.
In the given period, Italy's imports of long steel products from non-EU countries increased by 26.4 percent to 388,000 metric tons, while its long steel product exports to non-EU destinations totaled 686,000 metric tons, up 1.3 percent, both year on year.
On the other hand, in the first half of 2011 Italy's flat steel product imports from non-EU sources reached 3.09 million metric tons, up 67.4 percent as compared to January-June 2010, while its flat steel product exports to non-EU countries amounted to 825,000 metric tons, with a 17.5 percent decrease year on year.
