Italy’s May industrial output down 22 percent from pre-crisis peak

According the latest report by Italy's industrial confederation Confindustria, in May this year Italian industrial production decreased by 0.6 percent compared to April, when it had registered a month-on-month decrease of 0.5 percent. In May ,the fall from the pre-crisis peak in April 2008 amounted to 22.1 percent, while the recovery from the bottom level recorded in March 2009 was 5.2 percent.

Confindustria also stated that the trend in Italy's new industrial orders in May was down 0.9 percent month on month and down 3.2 percent year on year. In April, Italy's new industrial orders index had decreased 0.6 percent month on month and 3.8 percent year on year.

Italian industrial production has recorded a total seven percent contraction in the last three quarters. The trend in Italian industrial production in the second quarter is not expected to be positive.
