The Italian equipment producer Tenova has announced that, together with the Italian plantmaker Danieli, it has received an order for the turnkey supply of a new ENERGIRON III direct reduction plant from Egyptian steel producer Ezz Steel. The plant will be located at the company's premises in Ain Suhkna, Suez, Egypt.

The new ENERGIRON plant, jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli, is designed to produce 1.9 million mt per year of cold discharge direct reduced iron (DRI). The shaft furnace will be the world's largest in terms of productivity from a single production unit. The startup of the plant is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2011. The financial details of the order have not been disclosed.

An additional feature of the plant is the inclusion of a CO2 removal unit for the selection  and removal of CO2 from the process gas recycle stream. The ENERGIRON plant fully complies with Egyptian environmental law, and meets or exceeds the strictest environmental requirements worldwide.

The plant has been designed taking into account the future expansion plans of Al Ezz Rolling Mills in Ain Suhkna. Last August SteelOrbis reported Ezz Steel's plans to invest $475 million to set up a new billet production line and a DRI plant. For the construction of the DRI facility, the company intended to invest $400 million.
