Luigi Lucchini, Italian steel entrepreneur and former president of Italian employers' federation Confindustria, died on Monday, August 26, at the age of 94, as reported by Italian media.
Mr. Lucchini began his career in the steel industry by building a small mill for the production of rebar after the Second World War. In the seventies and eighties, the Lucchini group expanded its product portfolio with investments and acquisitions. In the nineties, the group acquired a majority stake in the steel plant at Piombino which produces quality long rolled products (bars, rods, rails). In 2005, following a financial restructuring, Russian steel producer Severstal took possession of 62 percent of shares of the Lucchini group, going on to take possession of 100 percent of the group five years later.
From 1984 to 1988, Luigi Lucchini was president of Confindustria. In addition, Lucchini served as president of Compart and Montedison, and was also board member in companies such as Assicurazioni Generali, Abi, Mediobanca and Olivetti.
