In recent days, the situation of steel company Sertubi of Trieste (Duferco Group) was discussed at a meeting at the administrative headquarters of the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Sertubi, which is facing a difficult period mainly due to a drop of orders, in recent months has had to lay off about 200 employees, out of 230.
The meeting was attended, among others, by the president of the region, Renzo Tondo,, the president of Duferco Italia Holding Antonio Gozzi, and by Sertubi president Maurizio Bergonzi.
The management has confirmed it is working towards a continuation of production, even indirectly, through the involvement of an international partner.
Mr. Tondo emphasized the full commitment of the region and institutions to preserve jobs and maintain in Trieste an important industrial activity such as Sertubi, which is the only Italian manufacturer of pig iron pipes for water and sewage systems. In particular, the meeting discussed the tools available to the region for the support of production activities.
Sertubi annually produces thousands of tons of cast iron pipes used for the construction of aqueducts and sewers. The production of pig iron tubes uses pig iron internally produced by Ferriera di Servola of Lucchini Group, which is known to be struggling with a difficult debt restructuring plan at present.
