Indian state-owned steelmaker Steel Authority of India Limited’s (SAIL) Bokaro Steel Plant (BSP) in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand has commenced a $170 million modernization of its melting shop, a company official said on Friday, November 6.
The official said that the modernization of the steel melting shop and sinter plant will entail the installation of a basic oxygen furnace and a continuous slab caster replacing the current ingot casting and slab mill route currently in place. The design and basic engineering work will take about six months following which installation work will be undertaken, he added.
Meanwhile, late last month, BSP completed the $69 million upgrade of its hot strip mill and the steel mill commenced production of hot rolled coil (HRC) earlier this week, after two months, the official said.
He said that for the next few weeks BSP will be producing 6,000 mt of HRC per day and production will gradually ramp up to 12,000 mt per day as the mill’s operations stabilize and in one and a half months it will reach full capacity of 250,000 mt per month.
