In November this year, India's annual inflation based on the wholesale price index (WPI), the main inflation gauge, rose 9.11 percent from a year earlier, slowing from a 9.73 percent year-on-year rise in October, according to the official data released on December 14. An 8.2 percent rise was observed in November 2010.

Inflation has been at high levels for more than two years in India. November is the 12th straight month in which annual inflation has been over nine percent.

The index of manufactured products, which has the highest weightage in the wholesale price index, rose by 7.7 percent year on year in November. On month on month basis, the index for basic metals, alloys and metal products rose 1.5 percent due to higher prices of chrome (up five percent), rounds, hot rolled coils, angles, plates and cold rolled coils (up three percent each), while the index for machinery and machine tools rose 0.2 percent.
