In the wake of rising steel imports into the country, the India government is seeking greater collaboration with the domestic steel industry in securing faster and more in-depth market intelligence on the Chinese steel industry, an official at India’s Ministry of Commerce said on Tuesday, September 29.

The official said that the Indian government has initiated various studies on the impact of steel imports and investigations into injury caused to domestic steel mills. However, a higher level of engagement is required between the government and domestic steel companies to gather market intelligence faster and to grasp the dynamics of the Chinese steel industry to further such investigations, he said.

The commerce ministry official suggested that steel industry experts and analysts should step up their visits and engagements with their counterparts in the Chinese steel industry and share data and intelligence on detailed production, pricing, marketing and forecasting with the India’s Ministry of Commerce.

While exploring every opportunity to protect the domestic industry, the government should not violate international trade agreements and endanger the country’s trading partners, the official added.
