India’s Ministry of Commerce will hold consultations with domestic steel companies before pushing for a probe into evasion of payment of antidumping (AD) duties on imported stainless steel products, a government official said on Friday, June 16.

The official said that domestic steel companies will be asked to make their representations on July 3 on allegations of antidumping duty evasion filed by Indian stainless steel producer Jindal Stainless Steel Limited.

Following submissions made by domestic steel companies, trade investigation departments under the Ministry of Commerce will consider various measures to plug such duty evasion by local importers, the official added.

A previous probe into duty evasion launched earlier this year was challenged in courts, with the courts deciding to stay the investigation. But since this stay order was subsequently cancelled by the courts, the government is pushing ahead with a fresh investigation, the official added.
