In the week ended June 3, coal shipments from the Port of Newcastle in Queensland, the coal producing state of Australia, totaled 2.56 million mt, according to Newcastle Port Corporation. The figure constitutes an increase of 5.9 percent compared to the previous week ended May 27, in which a week-on-week increase of 9.75 percent in coal shipments had been observed.
The port authority forecasts that Newcastle port will ship a total of 12.3 million mt for the whole of June while Newcastle port exported 11.4 million mt of thermal and coking coal in May this year. In June 2012, Newcastle port had exported almost 11.5 million mt of thermal and coking coal.
Anglo American, Peabody Energy, Rio Tinto and Xstrata are some of the larger exporters to ship coal from Newcastle port.
