Automaker GM is currently negotiating with a local union a plan to provisionally dismiss the company’s workers at its Sao dos Campos mill located in the city of same name in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo.

Both the automaker and the local union met this week to discuss the company’s proposal.
The local union sent a letter to the GM workers saying it would accept the provisional layoff as long as they are guaranteed to keep their jobs after the layoff period ends. The union fears workers could be dismissed permanently.

According to the local union, GM in Brazil didn’t specify how many workers would be affected. A new meeting involving GM and the union is scheduled for April 3, when the negotiations should be concluded.

GM’s Sao Jose dos Campos plant employs about 5,000 workers and produces the S10 and Trailblazer models.
