Global crude steel production for October 2007

Data released by the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) show that global crude steel production for October 2007 rose 6.6 percent year on year to 114 million metric tons. 

China is again the largest steel producing country with crude steel production of 43 million metric tons in October, an increase of 13.5 percent from a year earlier. Total production in the Asian region amounted to 64 million metric tons, up 10.5 percent on a year ago. 

Germany produced 4.2 million metric tons of crude steel in October 2007, showing a decrease of 1.1 percent year on year. Italy produced three million metric tons in the month in question, marking a decrease of two percent year on year. France produced 1.4 million metric tons, a decrease of 12.5 percent compared to the same month in 2006. Production in the UK was 1.1 million metric tons, 6.4 percent lower than October 2006. Total production in the EU-15 amounted to 15 million metric tons, down 1.6 percent on a year ago.

Brazil produced 2.9 million metric tons of crude steel in October 2007, an increase of 4.4 percent compared to October 2006.

Turkey's crude steel production in October rose 6.8 percent year on year to 2.2 million metric tons. Total production in the Other Europe region was 2.5 million metric tons, an increase of 2.1 percent year on year. 

The USA produced an estimated 8.5 million metric tons in October 2007, registering a 5.1 percent increase year on year.
