Data released by the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) show that global crude steel production for April 2007 rose 7.6 percent year on year to 109.3 million metric tons.
China is again the largest steel-producing country with crude steel production of 40.3 million metric tons in April, an increase of 16.5 percent from a year earlier. Total production in the Asian region amounted to 59.8 million metric tons, up 12.7 percent on a year ago.
Germany produced 4.1 million metric tons of crude steel in April 2007, an increase of 0.5 percent year on year. Italy registered a crude steel output for April 2007 of 2.9 million metric tons, up 10.4 percent on the figure for April 2006. France produced 1.1 million metric tons, a rise of 1.4 percent compared to the same month in 2006. Production in the UK was 1.1 million metric tons, 3.9 percent higher than April 2006.
Brazil produced 2.7 million metric tons of crude steel in April, an increase of 12.1 percent compared to April 2006.
Turkey's crude steel production in April rose 8.2 percent year on year to 2.1 million metric tons. Total production in the Other Europe region was 2.6 million metric tons, an increase of 11.3 percent year on year.
