Global crude steel output up 6.8 percent in 2011

According to the World Steel Association (worldsteel), in 2011 the crude steel output of 64 countries surveyed across the globe reached 1.5269 billion mt, increasing by 6.8 percent on year-on-year basis, hitting a record for global crude steel production. In December 2011, world crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to worldsteel was 117.1 million mt, with an increase of 1.7 percent compared to December 2010.
 
In 2011, crude steel output in Asia amounted to 988.2 million mt, up 7.9 percent, with 695.5 million mt produced by China, up 8.9 percent, 107.6 million mt produced by Japan, down 1.8 percent, and 68.5 million mt produced by South Korea, up 16.2 percent - with all comparisons on year-on-year basis.

EU-27 countries produced 177.4 million mt of crude steel in 2011, up 2.8 percent compared with 2010. In 2011,  Germany's output was 44.3 million mt, up by one percent year on year, Italy's crude steel output was 28.7 million mt, up 11.3 percent year on year, and Spain's crude steel output was 15.6 million mt, down 4.6 percent year on year.

Turkey produced 31.4 million metric tons of crude steel in 2011, with a 17 percent increase over 2010.

The CIS registered a crude steel output of 112.6 million mt in 2011, up four percent year on year, with Russia producing 68.7 million mt, up 2.7 percent, and Ukraine producing 35.3 million mt, up 5.7 percent, both on year-on-year basis.

In North America in 2011, crude steel output reached 118.9 million mt, up 6.8 percent year on year, with the US producing 86.2 million mt, up 7.1 percent on year-on-year basis.
 
Meanwhile, crude steel output in South America in 2011 reached 48.4 million mt, up by 10.2 percent year on year, with Brazil's output reaching 35.2 million mt, up by 6.8 percent year on year.
 
In December 2011, the average capacity utilization of steel mills across the globe was 71.7 percent, down by 2.2 percentage points month on month, and also down 2.1 percentage point compared to the same month last year.
