In Gerdau Chile’s monthly publication, Alma de Acero, General Manager Italo Ozzano said that increasing imports of rebar that don't meet Chilean standards are a concern for the company.

"We don't see any authority worried about this. It's necessary that the game become leveled through actions of inspection over rebar entering Chile," Ozzano said, pointing to a study from the Chilean Steel Institute (Icha) showing nearly half of imported rebar doesn't meet domestic standards.

To rectify the situation, Ozzano said all construction projects should be forced to prove the steel used is certified by the country’s standards.
