Automaker Ford has dismissed 364 workers at its Sao Bernardo Campo plant, located in the city of same name in the state of Sao Paulo, according to a local union.

The employees affected were on a temporary furlough, in which they had their contracts halted provisionally, but still received wages and other labor benefits. While the workers expected to return to work on Friday, the local union officials noted that the termination notices were received by employees on the same Friday.

Ford told Brazilian media it decided to dismiss the workers because of a need to balance its workforce with domestic demand.
